Exactly what is a quiz night?

A trivia night, or pub quiz, is normally an intimate competition where teams of 4-8 (6 is the ideal) spend a number of hours in a bar determining who has the most useless, trivial minds. A triviamaster presents a quiz with fifty to one hundred questions, normally divided into categories of 10 questions. Categories may include sport and leisure, grab bag, science, history, geography and literature. At the conclusion of the evening, the squad that has correctly answered the most quiz questions is the winner. The victorious squad usually wins a modest prize, but more significantly, pride of being the champs!

How to host a successful trivia night

Find a location

The greatest location for a trivia night, in order of suitability:

1. A neighborhood pub or bar, but attempt to pick a day that is not busy. The bar will in all probability not let you run an event on a crowded day, and the noise from the other customers may disrupt your event.
2. A church building. Make sure there is an area that can accommodate the number of people attending. If it's a very large area, make sure you bring a mike and-or a public address system. You might also want to sell food and drinks, just be sure to check with the local regulations.
3. School hall. Same concerns as running it at a church.
Promote your trivia night.

Talk to the bar about publicizing your trivia night. If its on a day they are not busy, they will welcome the extra customers and may put up posters promoting your trivia night.

Some other places to advertise your event:

Meetup.com. Start a new meetup group related to quizzes. People are always looking for quizzes and it's an inexpensive way to publicize your event.
Facebook. Publicize your event on facebook targeting people who are interested in quizzes.
Ask your friends! It's the best and cheapest way to get everyone interested in your event. Send out a status update, tweet or use any way you can to promote it, just don't overdo it.

Take your time preparing some outstanding questions and categories. Anybody can haphazardly put together 50-100 questions for a quiz event, but to get effective questions that are not too easy, not too difficult and also entertaining, that requires time.! This is likely the most significant part of getting prepared for your event.

Prizes

Most players who play pub quizzes are not in it for the money, but it unquestionably makes your quiz night better. You can speak to the pub or restaurant about adding some gift cards depending on how many players you bring to the bar. You may also want customers to chip in 2-5 dollars at the start of the event and use that for the prizes.

10 tips for running a successful quiz event:

10. Have questions of variable difficulty. The best rule of thumb is for every 10 questions, have 3 simple, 3 difficult and 4 somewhere in between. Too many hard or too many simple questions will result in the customers becoming bored, or discouraged.

9. Have clear, and concise rules! Make sure all customers know all the rules before the trivia starts. Clear rules will lead to a smooth event.

8. Take a short break midway through the trivia night. Your players will thank you for it.

7. Be entertaining! Try to throw in a joke or 2 throughout the trivia night, or have fun with some of the questions.

6. Instead of grading the scores each round (This takes a lot of time!) have the teams do their own marking by passing the answer sheets around each round. It will save a LOT of time and it's a lot less frustrating for the customers.

5. Update the scoring each round. Utilize either a paper score sheet, or even better, something that can go up on the big TV.

4. We all make mistakes. If you realize one of your questions is wrong, admit to it and give all teams full points for that question. Have Google on standby to check while you are between questions if you have any doubt...

3. Prepare, prepare, prepare! It takes time to make things run smoothly, but the more you are prepared, the better the experience will be for you and your players.

2. When handing out question sheets at the start of the quiz, be sure to provide extra scrap paper for the groups, along with a pen or pencil.

1. HAVE A BLAST! If you have fun, the players will have fun as well and will likely come back for more!
